- Abstract
The paper deals with Éric-Emmanuel Schmitt's play entitled Golden Joe, which is a modern rewriting of William Shakespeare's tragedy of Hamlet. Based on the theory and the terminology of hypertextual modes proposed by Gérard Genette, the study explores the differences that exist between the Schmitt's and the original Shakespeare's texts. In Golden Joe, Schmitt resorts to the myth of Hamlet intentionally and takes advantage of the fact that it is universally known. Similarly, he utilizes the possibilities offered by the rewriting of the text. His aim is to create a new interpretation of the text, which reflects the struggles and anxieties of living in the contemporary world, the basis of which is materialism and the power of money. Schmitt is not afraid to transform the protagonist into an heir of a financial world, where the meaning of life equals financial gain. The paper examines the modalities of rewriting that occur both at the level of the diegesis and at the level of the dramatic categories. Subsequently, we focus on the transvalorization of the protagonist and his initiatory journey as well as on the transformation of the relationships between the characters, which results in the establishment of new themes. This analysis then allows us to reveal various aspects of the updated original myth and to point to Schmitt's creative originality.
