- Abstract
In the present study, we focused on the contributions of faith-based organizations (FBO) in the provision of mental health (MH) services to the residents of Rio Grande Valley of Hidalgo County in Texas (HCT). Despite their substantial contributions in providing health and social services to the community, the delivery of MH services is not well accounted for nor understood. There is minimal information regarding the MH practices and interventions of religious or spiritual (R/S) leaders in mental health. Using the face-to-face questionnaire process, 245 R/S leaders of the FBO in Hidalgo County, Texas were interviewed. Key findings suggest that the resources of the FBO and education levels of the R/S leaders play an integral role in the delivery of MH services. R/S leaders spend an average of two hours per week counseling people with mental health issues. The results of the present study highlight the importance of MH training and education for R/S leaders, as well as building collaborative and network relationships with governmental and non-governmental agencies to meet the MH needs of the community and strengthen the MH referral process for the FBO. Suggestions are made for future research and recommendations.
