- Abstract
The article describes the care and maintenance of the Williams' toad-headed turtle (Phrynops williamsi) as well as the author's experiences with breeding. The turtles live in rocky rivers and streams in subtropical South America and are found in Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay. Their population is decreasing due to the construction of dams and reservoirs. The care requires a combination of indoor and outdoor housing with good lighting, warmth, and brightness. The turtles use dry sunbathing spots to regulate their temperature and have a nesting area. They require sufficient swimming space and current and can be housed with other peaceful aquatic turtles. Feeding is done with a varied mixture of dry, frozen, and live food. In winter, the turtles are kept in an indoor facility and the temperatures are gradually reduced. The turtles are fed less and spend most of their time resting. Breeding occurs at a temperature of 30 °C and courtship and mating mainly take place in spring and autumn. Raising the hatchlings is problem-free. Moisture plays an important role in the incubation and hatching of the turtles. It is recommended to incubate the eggs with medium substrate moisture and high air humidity, and to increase the humidity after about 120 days. The gender of the turtles may not depend on the incubation temperature. The author hopes that the report will generate interest in this species of turtle and thanks other turtle keepers for their support.
