- Abstract
The Museum has been frequently studied and written about, from Henry W. Acland and John Ruskin's I The museum i (1859), through numerous articles in the contemporary press, especially I The builder i , to H. M. Vernon's I A history of the Oxford Museum i (1909). But perhaps one of the most interesting aspects of this book is the admiration shown by Holmes for the carvers of the famous stone ornamentations, the O'Shea brothers - James and John - and their nephew Edward Whelan. As Holmes puts it: "art became integral to the work that the Museum does to communicate, interpret and examine current science" and indeed it is an appropriate tribute to the scientific fathers of the Museum who founded this principle.
