- Abstract
The article "Our House is Burning - Climate Collapse between Truth and Apocalypse" in the Berliner Debatte Initial deals with the tension between truth and action in relation to climate change. It discusses why knowledge about climate change does not lead to appropriate action and why some people use apocalyptic images to call for action. The article also refers to Hannah Arendt's concept of truth and politics and examines the role of views and opinions in the political arena. It emphasizes that apocalypticism is a specific methodological way of anticipating the end of the world, but not an experience of the end itself. The text discusses the problem of apocalyptic end-time scenarios and their impact on perception and agency in relation to climate change. It argues that neither apocalyptic methods nor pure rational truth alone are sufficient to respond adequately to the challenges of climate change. Instead, apocalyptic heuristics are proposed as possible strategies to increase attention to the threat of climate change and promote a policy of self-preservation.
