- Abstract
The study seeks to identify the nature of alienation among Jordanian youth, determine the extent of its prevalence, and highlight some of its causing factors such as gender, residence, and family income. Four types of Alienation have been identified: self-estrange ment, political alienation, social alienation and cultural alienation. The study involved a random sample of 1070 students of the B.A program at Yarmouk University, focusing on four main factors deemed by the researcher as fostering the alienation phenomenon: 1 - The individual's feeling of subjugation to decision-makers. 2 - The feeling of being rejected by one’s own society. 3 - The feeling of loss and conflict at the multi roles assigned to an individual. 4 - The feeling of dissatisfaction with self-fulfillment. As for personal back ground factors of gender, residence and family income, nine different situations were identified and members of the study were asked to state their opinions regarding each situation. The study showed that members of the study suffer from alienation in its diverse types, while no significant difference was noted relating to gender, residence or family income. The results were closely correlated: males came first, then females, villagers first then city dwellers and finally desert dwellers. Students of low income families featured first followed by students of high income families, then students of average income families. The majority of sample members believe that adhherence to Islamic values and teaching, and resorting to Islamic Sharia, is the best way for redressing this social problem.
