- Abstract
Background. The inaccuracies in calculating fluid requirement in pediatric burn patients result in "fluid creep" phenomenon. The aim. To study variation in pediatric burn care, we surveyed the burn centers to determine how burn fluid care is currently administered in Poland in pediatric patients. Material and methods. Responses were obtained from 68 specialists in intensive care and pediatric surgery. The survey concerns the most often used schema for calculating fluid intravenous resuscitation in the burn pediatric patients. Results. The survey data suggest that fluid requirement is the most often predicted by Parkland formula, though that formula is not addressed to children. The Cincinnati and the Galveston pediatric formulae were not mentioned. There are also differences between clinicians according to their specialization and the presence of the "Burn Treatment Monitoring Protocol" in the hospital. Conclusion. The survey discloses the need for interdisciplinary standardization of fluid requirement calculation in the burn pediatric patients.
