- Abstract
The effects of varying relative humidity on some aspects of biology ofEphestia cautellaWalker (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) were examined in the laboratory. Different relative humidities (22, 28, 32, 40, 54, 57, and 100%) were maintained in enclosed desiccators with H2SO4.The fecundity ofE. cautellaat 57% relative humidity was significantly higher than that of any other relative humidities studied. A relative humidity of 22% caused 100% inhibition of egg viability in less than 24 h, which was significantly lower (p < 0.05) than egg viability at 32 to 100% relative humidity. Relative humidities of 57 and 100% favoured adult emergence from third instar larvae and showed a significant difference from the effect of lower relative humidity. Adult male mortality of 96.7% was achieved at 22% relative humidity, and 70% adult female mortality was obtained under similar relative humidity conditions within 48 h.E. cautellamales were more susceptible to low relative humidity than those ofE. cautellafemales. Therefore, studies on the use of relative humidity for control of other pests of stored products, across wide biogeographic ranges, are recommended. Esant 57% santykiniam drėgnumuiE. cautellavislumas buvo didžiausias. 22% santykinio drėgnumo sąlygose visi kiaušinėliai žuvo per mažiau nei 24 valandas. 57 ir 100% santykinis drėgnumas palankiausias suaugėlių išsiritimui iš trečiosios stadijos lervų. Esant 22% santykiniam drėgnumui po 48 valandų suaugusių patinėlių mirtingumas buvo 96,7%, o suaugusių patelių – 70%.E. cautellapatinėliai buvo jautresni žemam santykiniam drėgnumui nei patelės. Kontroliuojant maistinių kandžių biologinį aktyvumą rekomenduojama atlikti platesnius santykinio oro drėgnumo poveikio tyrimus.
