- Abstract
The purpose of this article is to document and to interpret the cultural-political trajectory of the Albanian writer Ismail Kadare, following a set of guidelines. His first novels of continental importance were written and published during the isolationist communist regime of Enver Hoxha. The intellectual's position during this period was apparently a privileged one: the student exchange program with Moscow was stopped in 1961 due to the broken down of diplomatic relations between the Soviet Union and Albania. For this reason, Kadare had to return to Albania, which, in the decades that followed, gradually became isolated. We will insist on the novel Palace of Dreams, published in 1981 and later banned by the Albanian communist censorship, applying multiple reading grids to it, in order to highlight the connection and the literature-politics ratio.
