- Abstract
The article discusses the oil and tempera on wood painting "The Virgin Chancellor of Rolin," circa 1435, by Flemish painter Jan van Eyck. The painting is known for its sense of depth and for its message on the value of human achievements and their consistency with the service of God. It still conveys a sense of depth despite the fact that it does not conform to the geometric principles of the Florentine architect Filippo Brunelleschi. It was suggested by the modern painter David Hockney that van Eyck used an optical technique.
