- Abstract
The article describes the life and work of Joaquin Torres-Garcia, whose painting "Composicion Universal, 1933, Uruguayan" appears on the cover of the July 16, 2008 issue of the journal. The artist was born in Montevideo, Uruguay, where he lived until he was 17, before his family returned to his father's native Spain where Joaquin studied art. His mosaic painting style is described as using the universal language and common symbols of the human unconscious. His unique use of grid patterns consisting of rectangles and squares, which Torres-Garcia called "Humanistic Constructivism," is explained.
