- Abstract
The article describes the life and work of Berthe Morisot, whose painting "The Cage, 1885" appears on the cover of the June 25, 2008 issue of the journal. Morisot is noted as one of the most successful of all French Impressionist painters. Her painting of a bird cage is described as a fine example of Impressionism with a heightened color palette with broad brush strokes. The foreground and background are ambiguous and nearly abstract in their execution. The painting is compared to a painting by Edouard Manet in which she appears as a prominent figure.
