- Abstract
The article looks at drug patents and access to medical care, as of 2013. It discusses the effort of the pharmaceutical industry based in developed countries to establish global intellectual property protections in order to prevent the manufacture and sale of low-cost drugs in the developing world. It cites a 2013 decision by the Indian Supreme Court in a case regarding the patent protection of the leukemia drug Gleevec from drug company Novartis. Topics include generic drugs and bilateral and multilateral trade agreements with implications for intellectual property and drug patents, including the Trade-Related Aspects of Intellectual Property Rights (TRIPS) agreement and the proposed Trans-Pacific Partnership Agreement (TPP).
