- Abstract
The present research investigates the effect of empathy priming on emotional intelligence, empathy, and grandiose state narcissism, that is contextual narcissistic personality traits. State narcissism involves mutually reinforcing and coherent traits, if one of them is reduced - lack of empathy - can reduce the extent of state narcissism in the short term. Empathy priming resulted in two experimental conditions: high and low empathy priming groups. The results of the study indicated that neither empathy priming, nor gender had a significant effect on empathy, emotional intelligence, and grandiose state narcissism, but the effect size indices indicated a weak effect of both independent variables within the sample. The interaction effects of empathy priming, gender and time were significant for emotional intelligence and empathy. Women's empathy increased while their emotional intelligence decreased in both groups. Men's empathy and emotional intelligence also increased in the high empathy priming group, while both decreased in the low empathy priming group. The results of the study are applicable in social, work, and organizational psychology for the improvement of pro-social behavior, group work. The findings are also important in psychotherapy for the decrease of the maladaptive aspects of grandiose state narcissism.
