- Title
Discontinuation of Spectinomycin.
- Abstract
This article concerns the discontinuation of the drug Spectinomycin in the U.S. The drug will continue to be distributed outside the U.S. for the international market. Pfizer, Inc. stopped distribution in the U.S. in November 2005 and the remaining inventory expires in May 2006. The drug is used in the treatment of Neisseria gonorrhoeae when the patient cannot receive the two first-line treatments currently recommended for uncomplicated gonococcal infection. There are relatively few times when spectinomycin is the preferred treatment, such as pregnant women who are allergic to penicillin or cephalosporin.
