- Authors
Daldorph, Brian
- Abstract
The article offers the authors overview of his experience in teaching creative writing to inmates at Douglas County Jail in Lawrence, Kansas for nine years. He mentions that the prisoners lived difficult lives and reflected it to their writing. He notes that they often write on substance abuse with an authenticity showing their knowledge on the subject of addiction. He points out that writing classes in jails improve their lives but does not solve all problems especially in the issue of drug abuse. An overview of poet Jimmy Santiago Baca's view on the value of the inmate writing program is also presented.
