- Abstract
A survey of breast cancer in Japan by the TNM system was started in 1963 and completed in 1972. A total of 11,563 Japanese patients with breast cancer was registered in the 56 clinics participating in this survey during the period. Of the cases registered, a total of 4,587 cases treated from 1963 to 1967 was analysed in order to evaluate the five-year end results related to the TNM clinical staging. The 11,563 breast cancer patients in the series comprised 11,496 women and 67 men, and there were 10,303 primary cases and 1,260 non-primary cases. Of these cases, 10,240 cases eligible for the study were analysed with regard to the following items; age, size of tumor, site of tumor, histologic type, assignments to T, N and M and clinical stage. The survival data related to the TNM classification were presented. The over-all five-year survival was 67.0% including the cases lost to follow-up, or 72.2% excluding the lost cases. The five-year cure rate was 63.4% including the lost cases, or 63.3% excluding the lost cases. The five-year survival rate was 88.4% in stage I, 75.1% in stage II, 46.3% in stage III and 4.4% in stage IV. The five-year cure rate was 85.8% in stage I, 71.4% in stage II, 39.2% in stage III and 0% in stage IV. In annual changes of the rates, gradual improvement was seen over the period from 1963 to 1967.
