- Abstract
Odyssey is retold in prose by Marilù Oliva. In this text, by using the 1st person, the authoress successively gives voice to the feminine characters form the epics. Without significant omissions, the Homeric narative content is preserved, sometimes in a condensed form. The original frame is scrupulously preserved altogether with the specific rhetorical elements such as the Homeric epithetes. The voices that can be heard in this novel are those of the deities and the women which were drawn in the adventures of Odysseus. One can hear the voice of Calypso, Athena, Nausicaa, Circe, the Mermaids, Eurycleia and Penelope. Each of them represents different hypostases of feminity, from the obedience of the maid to the emancipation of the witch. In the novel, the multiplication of the points of view triggers the individualisation of the feminine characters which is almost absent at Homer. The ideological approach is evident in the novel and has the function to make more proeminent the feminine characters and their feminist beliefs. Furthermore, the novel highlights the ideea that the great force of Odyssey resides in its capacity of reflecting itself in the present.
