- Abstract
The article explores the negative implications of "Don't Say Gay" bills, which restrict discussions of LGBTQ topics in schools. It argues that these bills violate the First Amendment, limit speech about LGBTQ people and issues, and create unsafe environments for LGBTQ students. The article also discusses the impact of these bills on teacher speech and the banning of queer storylines in books. It highlights the public health impacts of anti-LGBTQ rhetoric and chilled speech, emphasizing the importance of LGBTQ-affirming environments in schools for better mental health outcomes. The text concludes by calling for the protection and inclusion of LGBTQ youth through enshrining LGBTQ education into law.
