- Abstract
This essay faces the phenomenon of the de-Christianisation and of the preparing of the Revolutionary worships in the Gascon département of the Gers, between the autumn of the year 1793 and the spring of the year 1794. On the one part the documents born by the Revolutionary institutions (above all the records of the Jacobinical clubs and the correspondence of the représentant en mission with the Committee of Public Safety) on the other, the series of the Documents de la Raison by Pierre-Nicolas Chantreau (this is the only example of a periodical which was specifically meant for the anti-Christian campaign in the France of the Terror) expound the dynamis, the questions and the tensions which were likely to characterize, in a local seat the total struggle against superstition: till which point the use of violence was allowable? Which should be the aims and the tone of the new Revolutionary worships, and which their success? And in which proportion the traumatic shock constituted by the de-Christianisation came in and placed itself above some ancient discords and factions? The essay, attempting to inquire into some implications of the "dechristianising mentality", means also to discuss the attitude of the militant revolutionaries of the 2ndyear towards particular categories of persons such as women, peasants, children.
