The author presents a criticism of several African American autobiographies. He mentions autobiographical material by Sterling Brown, Langston Hughes, and Zora Neale Hurston, their use of comedy to deflect hardships in their lives, and the conflict between the impersonality of comedy and the personality of autobiography.
