- Title
MARY AND MYSTICISM IN BEDE'S HOMILIES.
- Authors
Heisey, Daniel J.
- Abstract
This article presents an examination into the homilies of the 8th-century Christian theologian and writer Bede, analyzing his engagement with mysticism and the spiritual life in his seven sermons on the Virgin Mary. Introductory comments are given outlining reasons why Bede's writings should be examined through the lens of mystical theology. The liturgical context of Bede's homilies are examined. His specific treatment of the Latin phrases "ancilla Domini" and "famulus Christi" are analyzed. Conclusions are then given summarizing Bede's conception of Marian spirituality.
