DIES MEMORABILIS: CONTINUITY IN ENGLISH BENEDICTINE MONASTICISM.
- Authors
Hughes, Barnaby James
- Abstract
The article presents an examination into the continuity of the English Benedictine Congregation on monks from the Middle Ages to the present, highlighting the impact of the "Dies Memorabilis" and the dissolution and reforming of monasteries in England. Details are given describing the history of Benedictines in England, tracing their foundation in 1216. The Congregation's own celebration and documentation of the events of 1556 and 1607, wherein the monks were allowed to reestablish ties with their fellow Continental monks and reestablish their lifestyle in Westminster Abbey, is analyzed. The challenges and legitimacy of the continuity between the pre- and post-16th century Congregation is then discussed.
