- Abstract
The article discusses the sealing industry of Sydney, Australia from 1800 to 1820. The author explains that in the 19th century, Sydney entrepreneurs exported seal skins, seal and sea-elephant oil to Canton, New South Wales and London, England. The article details the working conditions of the sealing masters, as well as their compensation. The author explains that the sealers were paid a specified percentage of the total catch of the gangs to which they belonged. Subjects of the article also include the wages of sailmakers, the weekly rations of sealers, and sealing master Robert Campbell.
