- Abstract
The article discusses the role of Josyf Slipyj, an archbishop of the Ukrainian Greek Catholic Church (UGCC), at the Second Vatican Council (Vatican II). Particular focus is given to evidence drawn from the diaries of council participants Cardinal John Willebrands and Maxim Hermaniuk. According to the author, Slipyj sought to preserve the Byzantine or Eastern character of his religious community. Details on the impact of his imprisonment in the Soviet Union on his participation are also presented. Other topics include the education of Ukrainian Greek Catholics, ecumenicism, and Russian Orthodox participation in Vatican II.
