- Abstract
Bariatric surgery is an effective treatment for obesity and can lead to remission of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). However, there is evidence that bariatric surgery can cause temporary worsening of diabetic retinopathy (DR) before long-term improvement. Patients with pre-existing DR are at a higher risk of progression after surgery. Regular monitoring by ophthalmologists and retinal screening teams is recommended to assess DR status before and after bariatric surgery. While bariatric surgery is associated with fewer cases of sight-threatening DR, early worsening can be more severe in patients with pre-existing DR.
