- Abstract
In this article, the author presents information on the psychological approaches to study related to the uremic state. There is no single psychological parameter or behavior pattern, which can be attributed to uremia that differentiates it from other life-threatening, chronic progressive diseases. The many nonspecific effects, which accompany metabolic disorders of various kinds, rule out any absolute test of the adequacy of dialysis. In addition to the primary effects of the uremic state, there are also secondary effects from the treatment process itself. When a person is living under the constant threat of death, with many restrictions and the need to forego pleasures, depression and thoughts of suicide are appropriate responses. Depression itself has cognitive and behavioral concomitants, which are frequently observed in uremia, that is, feelings of fatigue, inability to concentrate.
