- Abstract
The work by Luise Czajkowski titled "Writing Languages in Transition" examines language change in the Low German-East Central German transitional area in the Late Middle Ages and Early Modern Period. The author uses documents and city books from the area between Halle (Saale) and Calbe (Saale) to investigate the development of written language variation in this region. Special attention is given to the transition from Low German to High German, which occurred earlier in this area than north of the Benrath Line. The work is divided into four parts and uses a homogeneous database to present and discuss the results cartographically, in tables, and in a textual commentary. Czajkowski's work examines the written language change in the transition from Low German to High German in the northern German region. The results show that Low German forms were gradually replaced by High German forms. The change occurred from south to north and led to an increase and subsequent decrease in variations. The results are also reflected in today's northern German dialects. The work provides important insights into the historical development of language and the emergence of Standard German.
