- Abstract
Because of constant deterioration of modern man environment, studies about mutagenesis have become more important in the world today. Human beings are exposed to the action of many toxic gene agents (agents able to damage the DNA). Among them, UV radiation has more incidence on the earth's surface, as consequence of the ozone layer depletion. Skin cancer is one of the most severe effects produced by UV radiations. At present, skin tumours are the most frequent type of human neoplasm. In this paper, some physical aspects of ultraviolet radiations, as well as chemical and molecular transformations that they can produce concerning life, are described. Also genetic damages and others biological effects produced by UV rays are mentioned. Living organism mechanisms of defence against this mutate and their importance are quoted, taking into account the risk that the presence of genetic lesions represents for the human health. Finally, incidence of this environmental agent on human populations and adoption of appropriate protection measures are analyzed.
