- Abstract
Introduction: This study aimed to verify the association between strength testing for upper limbs (FMS), lower limbs (FMI) and hand grip (FPM) in older practitioners of physical exercises. Materials and Methods: Participated on this study 331 older adults (47 men and 284 women) aged 60 to 93 (mean age= 70,49; DP= 6,05) participating of the Physical Activity Program for Older Adults of the Sports Center -- Federal University of Santa Catarina State. The entire group had strength tested on 2005. Spearman's correlation was applied to verify the correlation between variables. Significance level was set at p<0,05. Results: A significant correlation was presented among the tests (p<0,05), but the relation between FPM and FMI (r=0,164) and FPM and FMS (r=0,189) was weak. This can be related to the different types of fibers involved in the tests, and/or the muscle loss may occur differently on the different muscle groups. Another fact is that the hand grip strength works with isometric contraction and muscles that are not essential on the body weight support. Discussion: It is necessary to evaluate the strength in older practitioners of physical exercises through different methods.
