Sunday Vespers in the Parish Church.
- Authors
Andersen, Eric M.
- Abstract
The article discusses Sunday Vespers as part of the U.S. Catholic parish church tradition. The liturgical movement of the 20th century contributed in creating a theology of liturgy, based from the Vatican II, consisting of both the Mass and the Divine Office. The movement led to the revival of Vespers in the parish churches. Bishop John Caroll started the performing of Sunday Vespers through one of his issued decrees in 1791, wherein it was celebrated in the afternoon, 3 pm during the summer and 2 pm in the winter.
