The article explores the design of wideband voltage-variable attenuator (VVA) topologies that have fewer circuit elements in order to reduce the size of the device and the cost of production. The TEE positive-intrinsic-negative (PIN) diode configuration was used to assemble a variable resistance attenuator, requiring fewer components but able to produce sufficient gain leveling for low noise amplifier (LNA) use.
