- Abstract
The debate over the death of book has been discussed for more than 100 years, and though the book as a material object is still available in large numbers, the speed of technological development continues to threaten its existence. With new forms and new ways of reading now available, society might be witnessing the death not only of the book but also the intimate act of reading and the integrity of meaning. In response, my paper engages in the materiality of the printed book and considers a creative way to mourn its perceived passing. Given that the printed book is renominated as an articulate mode of metaphoric expression, The Memorial as one component from "The Passing" exhibit is rhetorically revealed. I argue that the artefact is reasserted, not as bereavement but as an acknowledgement that the tactility of the book as an evolutionary phenomenon, can engage in unique ways.
