- Abstract
This document is a commentary on a paper by Stigter et al. on the practical application of post-mortem mechanical stimulation of skeletal muscle. The authors discuss the use of mechanical and electrical excitability of skeletal muscle to estimate the time since death. They highlight that a reflex hammer can be used for examining mechanical excitability, but a learning period is necessary for consistent results between different pathologists. The authors suggest further research on positive and negative reactions plotted over time, the influence of ambient temperature on mechanical excitability, paired reactions for different muscles, and identifying which muscle loses mechanical excitability first.
