- Abstract
The article discusses the history of the Loray Mill in Gastonia, North Carolina from 1900 to 1935, examining its role within the global textile industry and the surrounding business community. It was founded by businessmen John F. Love and George A. Gray and was sold to Jenckes Spinning Company of Rhode Island in 1919, after which it shifted to making tire fabrics. The author comments on labor relations, strikes in 1919 and 1934, and management of the mill by outsiders from New England. Communist labor organizing is also discussed.
