- Abstract
Review of the movie Amazonia, the new Minamata? By director Jorge Bodanzky and produced by Nuno Godolphim, one of the founders of the Visual Anthropology Research Center at Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul. The film deals with the tragedy of the Munduruku (Brazil) in contrast to the situation in Minamata (Japan) based on photographs by Eugene Smith and films by Noriaki Tsuchimoto on the phenomenon known as "Minamata Disease", with images of neurological problems and psychomotor effects in the bodies of Japanese survivors, as well as contemporary interviews. The film depicts the struggle of indigenous peoples, especially leader Alessandra Korap, among others, who are dedicated to the issue of the health status of the Munduruku and demand medical scientific research on mercury levels in the population, in denunciation of illegal mining and to the government's neglect of the 2018-2022 management.
