- Abstract
The article discusses the historical motivations behind the work of African American teachers and educators from the time of Reconstruction to the 21st century. The experience of black teachers from the North going to work in Freedmen's Schools in the South, and the experiences of Southern black teachers, are discussed, with reference to studies by researcher Ronald Butchart. Also discussed is the African American approach to teaching as community work. Following the article is a sample lesson plan for teachers who want to incorporate the legacy of black educators into their curriculum.
