- Abstract
The high temperature in a combustion chamber reduces the resistivity of a spark plug insulator. This phenomenon leads to an increase in the leakage current resulting in higher probability of misfire effect. This paper presents some results of calculations of temperature-dependent resistivity distribution in the ceramic material of a spark-plug insulator with respect to the temperature of center electrode. The following three cases were considered: cold engine start at coolant temperature 0°C, spark plug operation at self-cleaning temperature of 450°C, and spark plug overheating effect at 950°C. The results of computer simulation show more than three times lower resistivity of the ceramic material in the lower part of the center electrode of overheated spark plug than at the self-cleaning temperature of 450°C.
