- Abstract
This article discusses the work of Margarita Neiteler, a nun and photographer in Cologne. Neiteler was born in 1913 and worked as a medical-technical assistant at St. Elisabeth Hospital in Cologne for 27 years. She was part of a group of X-ray sisters and also practiced portrait, reproduction, and architectural photography. The article focuses on her photographs of Cologne Cathedral, particularly a glass negative taken in November 1945 during the reconstruction of the cathedral. Neiteler's photographs demonstrate her skill and professionalism as a photographer, and she was able to capture the damage to the cathedral while emphasizing its majesty and light. The article also discusses the exhibition "Fotografen sehen Köln," which showcased various photographers' images of Cologne, including Neiteler's work. The article suggests that Neiteler may have been influenced by the Neue Sachlichkeit (New Objectivity) movement in her photography. The connections between Neiteler and other photographers in Cologne are speculative due to a lack of biographical information, but the article suggests that she may have been familiar with the work of photographers such as Werner Mantz, Hugo and Karl Hugo Schmölz, and August Sander. Overall, the article highlights Neiteler's contributions to photography and encourages further exploration of the topic.
