- Abstract
The article discusses Northern philanthropy and organizational change in the Southern U.S. states during the time of the Jim Crow laws (1876 to 1965). The author explains how northern philanthropists worked to reform and promote change in the region's educational system. The article mentions the agenda of the General Education Board (GEB), asserted in 1911. An organizational framework that includes rural blacks in the reform dynamic is detailed. Subjects of the article also include the Negro Rural School Fund, republican values of Protestantism and capitalism, and reform as part of state and local governments.
