- Abstract
This article recounts the poetry Gathering of '91 organized by the Alberta Cowboy Poetry Association in Pincher Creek, Alberta on June 14 to 16, 1991. At the Gathering of '91 there were 45 poets and pickers, each of whom had two readings of from five to eight minutes over the three day schedule, which had been expanded to include Friday afternoon and Sunday morning to accommodate the large number of participants. The Gathering took place in the Cow Palace. At this Gathering the elders of Cowboy poetry were honored, but the mood of the festival was only sporadically nostalgic, and its vitality was evident in the age range, and in the numbers and enthusiasm of the participants. The printed program outlined a very full three days of poetry reading, singing, dancing, rodeo, art auction, and fashion show, all taking place in or just behind the hall. The poetry readings took place everyday in sessions of an hour each, the poet in each session introduced by a master of ceremonies who provided a brief biography or humorous anecdote. Most poems were narratives, and most were humorous, although there were also the elegies to the mountains, or graphic reminders of the hardships of cowboy life and death.
