- Title
The Story of Saul's Election (1 Samuel 9-10) in the Light of Mantic Practice in Ancient Iraq.
- Authors
Cooley, Jeffrey L.
- Abstract
The article discusses the debate among biblical scholars regarding source criticism of narratives describing the divine election of Saul in the biblical book 1 Samuel, chapters 9-10 and argues that comparing the narratives with mantic practice in ancient Iraq could confirm acts of divination. The author scrutinizes Neo-Assyrian and Neo-Babylonian materials and examples of mantic confirmation in the Hebrew Bible such as Joseph's dreams and the kings of Israel and Judah deciding to retake Ramoth-Gilead.
