Captain Cook's Artists.
- Authors
Lloyd, Christopher
- Abstract
The article discusses artists selected to illustrate the voyages of British explorer Captain James Cook, including John Webber, Sydney Parkinson, and William Hodges. It comments on the tendency to romanticize native peoples in these artists' works and examines the idea of the "Noble Savage." The author also notes naturalist and explorer Sir Joseph Banks' choice of Johan Zoffany as the artist for the Second Voyage and considers Zoffany's unfinished work "The Death of Captain Cook," depicting Cook's killing by Hawaiians.
