- Abstract
the study of this subject has a high importance in literature, history, culture and science because of the direct connection with the intellectual wealth of ancient Greece brought back by the translation in the Spanish schools of the middle ages. It was difficult for the literature, philosophy and Greek science to be understood in its original language, hence in this historic moment the role of the translator became a necessity to rediscover the wealth of Greek writings in other languages. Toledo, the most important Spanish city during the middle ages became the most important European center of culture and science and made possible the gathering of translators from all around Europe regardless of their religion. The School of Translation in Toledo became the successor of the translation that were previously carried out by monks in monasteries and it saw an extraordinary splendor in the period of arch bishop Raimondo the Spanish king Alphonso X, the knowledgeable. In this study we have made the argument of why Spain became a center for translation and why Toledo became the European city of knowledge. We have shown the extensive benefits the Spanish language has earned by getting the status of the language of culture and science through these translations. We have created a panorama of the translative models used, the issues faced in this long journey illustrated by examples of translated books of the time from ancient Greek and their critical reception.
