THE THIRD ROME - Permanent Myth of Pan-Slavism -.
- Authors
BICHIR, Florian
- Abstract
Russia, from Peter the Great, fervently desired to become a European Russia and a powerful state in the world arena, thus its political, social and especially economic policy. Russian messianism appears as the myth of the Third Rome, the Russian Orthodox Church being a vital supporter of the state in its actions meant to protect all Russians, a veritable divine mission, in essence, the Church and the State being ontologically united. Around this myth there were born subsequent ideals of Russia - the populist movement, Slavophilism, nationalism, socialism and the tsarist and Soviet imperialism.
