- Abstract
The article describes changes in marriage behavior in the U.S. from 1950 through 2010. It discusses factors in the decline of the social land legal importance of marriage such as acceptance of premarital cohabitation, policies on divorce and child support for children born out of wedlock and rising rate of premarital childbearing. It also examines trends in marriage behavior across socio-economic groups, race and gender.
