- Abstract
Necrosis of the collateral cartilage also called "quittor" results from a penetrating injury to the distal region of the pastern which results in infection and subsequent necrosis of the collateral cartilage, resulting in drainage of purulent material through fistulas formed in the proximal coronary band. An equine of six years, quarter horse, with injury history of three months in the medial region of the pastern of the right forelimb, which evolved into purulent drainage unresponsive to wound dressings and antibiotic. The animal was referred to the Veterinary Hospital of the University of Cuiabá which was conducted physical examination, blood tests and X-ray. Blood cell count was noted leukocytosis, and radiographically was found ossification of the collateral cartilage of the distal phalanx and irregular bone edges with focal areas of osteolysis, indicating osteitis. Therefore, we opted for surgical debridement of all calcified cartilage that appeared necrotic proximal region coronary band. Intravenous regional perfusion was performed with amikacin and systemic antibiotic therapy was also performed with ceftiofur sodium for 21 days, and the use of phenylbutazone, for three days. The animal remained with bandage until complete wound healing. Another radiographic analysis was performed seven days after the surgery, where he observed the complete removal of ossified structure affected.
