- Abstract
The aim of this paper is to analyze the variability of the currents recorded in the inner shelf off the city of Rio Grande, RS (32°S), Southwestern Atlantic Ocean, and verify the causes of these fluctuations. The current speed and direction were obtained by an acoustic Doppler current profiler (ADP - Sontek) moored near the 15-meter isobath (lat. 32 ° 25, 177 ‘S, lon. 052 ° 12.313' W). The meteorological data (wind speed and direction) were collected at the meteorological station of the Rio Grande Pilot Station. The rotated time series (along-shore e cross-shore) were analyzed separately in time and frequency domains during spring and summer of 2006-2007. The results show that during the time of the year when the NE winds are more intense, coastal flow is southward with an average velocity of 0,06 m / s. Higher energy is centered at the period of 10,3 days. Coastal currents over the inner shelf of Rio Grande do Sul are directly related to local wind patterns. Along-shore flows are strongly barotropic while cross-shore flows have a stronger baroclinic component.
