- Abstract
This article presents information on Charles R. Hancock, teacher of African-American students SIG. Charles R. Hancock, professor of educational studies and associate dean of the College of Education at The Ohio State University, received the SIG's leadership award during the annual business meeting in Philadelphia last year. The award recognized his role as one of the founders of the SIG as well as his support and efforts on behalf of African-American students and their educators. This honor is only one of Hancock's many accomplishments. Fluent in Spanish and French, he has also studied several African languages and Russian. He is a specialist in bilingual education and has completed several summers of postdoctoral study in the field. In addition, as the author, coauthor, or editor of nine books, he has studied and published in the areas of multicultural issues in school settings and student aptitude, attitude, and motivation. As a Mellon Fellow for 1994, he conducted research on alternative assessment methods at Johns Hopkins University and the National Foreign Language Center in Washington. In 1992, ACTFL awarded him the Anthony Papalia Award for Excellence in Teacher Education in 1980, he received ACTFLs Florence Steiner Award for Leadership in Foreign Language Education.
