- Abstract
The question of the primacy of the bishop of Rome as successor of Peter is very timely, not only from religious point of view, both for Catholics and for the ecumenism, but also for world politics, because of the undeniable abuse of this power by the Popes. This work aims to relate the papacy with the origin of the university in the Middle Ages. In 1231, Pope Gregory IX, by means of the bull Parens Scientiarum, confirms the Universitas magistrorum et scolarium Parisiensium. The creation of the universities, as well as the construction of cathedrals in medieval times, demonstrate the intellectual and artistic elevation of this period
